Turn the lamp off and let the globe and base cool before you change the bulb.

Why the bulb matters

The bulb in the base is what melts the wax. LAVA says its lamps don’t need special bulbs, but each one needs the bulb made for its design, so keep to the watts LAVA lists for your lamp.

LAVA’s chart gives each bulb’s watts and type, such as A15 or R20, but not its base. Take the old bulb with you to match the base.

If the wax won’t flow

The first time a new lamp runs, LAVA says the wax takes about two to six hours to start flowing. If it still won’t flow, turn the lamp off, let it cool, and check that the metal coil sits at the bottom of the globe. Twirling the globe gently in the base drops the coil into place.

LAVA warns that the glass globe and base get hot. Don’t handle or move the lamp while it’s on or still warm.

Common questions

Can I use an LED bulb in a lava lamp?

LAVA's chart lists only incandescent and reflector bulbs, and it's the bulb that melts the wax. Use the bulb the chart gives for your lamp.

How do I know when a lava lamp bulb needs changing?

LAVA says it's time for a new bulb when the lamp starts to look dim.
