Your answer

What bulb goes in an oven light?

GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool name a 40 watt appliance bulb or a small halogen, depending on the model. Your oven’s manual names the bulb for its model, and the old bulb’s look tells you which kind it is.

What does the old oven bulb look like?

With the oven cool and its power off, take off the glass cover over the bulb.

GE Appliances, most modelsA new 40 watt appliance bulb, not a standard 40 watt bulb; or a 120/130 volt G6.35 or G9 halogen, 50 watts at most
Frigidaire electric range (2005 manual)A new 40 watt appliance bulb
Frigidaire induction range (2023 manual)A new T-4 type halogen 40 watt appliance bulb
Whirlpool, certain modelsA standard 40 watt appliance bulb; for halogen bulbs, the watts in the manual

None of these makers gives a temperature rating for the bulb.

Two Frigidaire ranges in the table take different bulbs, so look up the manual for your own model number.

Getting the cover off

The bulb sits behind a glass cover at the back of the oven. On some ovens the cover turns a quarter turn counterclockwise. On others a wire holder clips it in. Hold a hand under the cover, push the wire aside and lift the cover off.

Put the cover back before you use the oven again. Frigidaire’s manuals say the glass shield must be in place whenever the oven is in use. Both add that the clock needs resetting once the power is back on.

Frigidaire’s 2005 manual says to wear a leather-faced glove in case the glass breaks. Its 2023 manual warns that touching a hot oven bulb with a damp cloth could make it break.

Common questions

Can I put an LED bulb in my oven?

GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool name appliance or halogen bulbs for their ovens, not screw-in LEDs. Use the bulb your oven's manual lists.

Is a new oven light bulb covered by the warranty?

Not on GE's ovens, unless the oven has LED lights. Check your own oven's warranty.
