E39 mogul base bulbs

E39 is the mogul screw base. In a home it turns up on some torchiere floor lamps that take a 3-way mogul bulb, and on big garage and yard lights, where Feit’s corn-cob LEDs fit with a mogul adapter.

What it looks like

It screws in like a household bulb, on a much bigger base. Philips’ base chart lists Mogul and Mogul Three Contact bases.

Torchiere 3-way lamps

Satco makes its LED 3-way mogul lamp for torchiere-style lamps, in place of 100/200/300 watt 3-way bulbs. Its S11490 uses 10, 22 and 34 watts, runs on 120 volts, is rated for damp locations, and is 7.09" long and 3.11" across. How the three levels work is on 3-way bulbs.

The DOE’s rule says a torchiere made on or after January 1, 2006 must use no more than 190 watts and must not be able to run lamps totalling more than 190 watts. Check the lamp’s own label for its limit.

Garage, barn and yard lights

Feit sells its corn-cob LEDs on an E26 base with an E39 adapter in the box, for mogul sockets in fixtures without a ballast. It describes them for large rooms, garages, barns and yards.

In order: Feit C7000/5K/LED/V1/HDRP, C10000/5K/LEDG3/HDRP and C5000/5KDDMM/LEDHDRP, listed 3.3, 3.8 and 3.2 inches wide. All three are rated for damp locations, aren’t dimmable, and are listed for 120 to 277 volts.

Check the length and width against the fixture’s globe or housing, and pick an enclosed-rated one if the fixture closes around the bulb.

Feit says a fixture that ran a high-pressure sodium, mercury vapor or metal halide lamp needs its ballast bypassed first. That means rewiring the fixture, so turn the power off at the breaker and have an electrician do it.

Common questions

Is a mogul base the same as E39?

Yes. Mogul is the name and E39 the code: Westinghouse lists it as E39 (Mogul). Satco marks its 3-way mogul LED E39d.

Where we get our information from

The base names come from the bulb makers’ catalogs, the 3-way mogul lamp from Satco’s sheet, the torchiere limit from the DOE’s rule, and the corn-cob and HID lamps from Feit Electric’s product pages and Westinghouse’s lamp catalog. Checked against published data from Westinghouse, Signify, US DOE, Satco and Feit Electric.
